Sigiriya (The Lion Rock), also known as the ‘Palace and Fortress in the sky’, was built by King Kassapa (477 – 495 AD) located in the Central district of Matale. Sigiriya is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its complex is considered one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning. One of the interesting aspects of The fortress is the web of gardens, the mirror wall decorated with the world famous colourful frescoes depicting the heavenly maidens and other structures.
Polonnaruwa, was the medieval capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th – 13th Century and rose to fame after the decline of Anuradhapura in 993. It was declared the second capital of the island by King Vijayabahu 1 who defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 to reunite the country over again after the fall of Anuradhapura. It is the second largest city in the Northern province of Sri Lanka. The history attests itself for the proud heritage that runs within the roots of the reputation of Polonnaruwa. The city in ancient history was yet another momentous kingdom. The Brahmanic monuments of the Cholas are amidst the finest historical representations of Polonnaruwa.
