Gal Oya National park is just another destination “Off the beaten track” seldom visited by foreign tourists and locals alike. It was established in 1954 and serves as the main catchment area for the Senanayaka Samudra which is known as the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka and several other reservoirs. One salient feature is that several herds of wild elephants can be seen inside this park throughout the year. Its flora and fauna consists of 32 terrestrial mammals which includes the Sri lankan elephant, the sambar deer, water buffalo, Sri Lanka Leopard, Torque monkey, wild boar etc. Among the reptile species, it includes the mugger crocodile, star tortoise etc. It is also home to 150 species of birds part endemic to Sri Lanka.
