NuwaraEliya is a city in the hill country of the Central province of Sri Lanka. Its name means  “city of light”. Approach to the city is surrrounded by landscaped mountains, exotic waterfalls, luscious tea plantations, tea factories, rose gardens and vegetable plots. The city contains a picturesque landscape and temperate climate at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) and is considered the ideally suited climate for tea production. The Pidurutalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka and Horton plains are within close reach of Nuwaraeliya and often used as a transit point or base to visit these sites. other interesting sights are the Gregory’s lake, bazaar area, Seetha Amman temple in Seetha Eliya where Sita the queen of Ramas was abducted and hidden by the Sri Lankan King Ravana of the Ramaya epic. NuwaraEliya contains a rather temperate and salubrious cool climate similar to that of a British countryside. Most cottage type Buildings are of English architecture somewhat similar to Georgian type buildings in the UK. Due to this reason NuwaraEliya is often called “Little England”. During the pre-colonial era, NuwaraEliya was also a prime holiday resort of the British civil servants and planters employed in the tea plantations of Ceylon. They used to spend their pastimes fox hunting, deer hunting, elephant hunting, polo, golf and cricket. The festive season starts in April each year during the Sinhalese & Tamil New Year and comes live with several activities.The main attractions being motor and horse racing events in Mahagastota and Radella Hill Climbs. There will be nightly parties and celebrations in the hotels, and the season concludes with the nine furlong horse racing events at the NuwaraEliya Race course, Golf Tournaments at the NuwaraEliya Golf club, and the flower show at the end of the month. During this period the Sri Lankans from Colombo, and various other parts of the country throng to NuwaraEliya to enjoy the cool climate, mainly to beat the summer heat in Colombo and other regions.
